You are good
Your intentions, relentless
Wave after wave,
Indefatigable
Lord, break over us
We, of small-minded polity, and punitive theology.
Raise up humanity
In the roar of your love.

Amen.

A Social Commentary on National Anthems, Unity, and Love

A bunch of people are mad that a system hasn’t treated them well. So, they lump everyone, and everything together, distrusting the organization of the system, and all who associate with it. They’re able to overcome their own minor differences to rally around hate of the system. This is an exercise in what can be called unity.

A bunch of other people are mad at the people who would dare speak out against the system. So, they lump everyone, and everything together, distrusting the organization of this anti-system, and all who associate with it. They overcome their own minor differences in order to rally around hate of the anti-system. This is also an exercise in what can be called unity.

A brown-skinned man, living 2,000 years ago entered, and subjected himself to our system so that we could be free from all its false narratives, including the most dangerous... unity through scapegoating. He invites all of humanity to be free; to start creating unity through love.

Love’s not a national thing, a political thing, a generational thing, nor even a religion thing. Love is entirely its own, and separate thing.

Unity through scapegoating solves a real problem, yet encourages it to resurface at a later date. Unity through love solves a real problem, and keeps it solved. So roll out your banners, yes, root for your team, your people, and your nation. Be proud. Have fun. Enjoy who you are, and where you've come from, but the highest banner followers of the messiah unfurl is the banner of love.
